It is perhaps the most famous bite in the history of literature…

The madeleine has been so thoroughly canonized since Mr. Proust deemed it the absolute memory trigger that it has become shorthand for memory itself, invoked by neuroscientists, perfume reviewers (ahem) and pastry chefs alike, as the sugar-dusted patron saint of nostalgia. Which is precisely why it is so delicious (pun absolutely intended) to see what The Different Company has done with her. Maddy, the new creation signed by Véronique Nyberg, takes Proust’s demure little madeleine and gives her a subversive new identity, with a nickname, a shot of aged rum, and a fake ID to sneak her past the velvet rope into a speakeasy.

And who better to shake this cocktail than Véronique Nyberg? Born in a small village in the Alps, with a passion for plants ignited by her botanist grandmother, she took the scientist’s path into perfumery, with a doctorate in Organic Chemistry, IFF’s perfume school in Grasse, training in Paris under the legendary Dominique Ropion, and, since 2014, the role of Vice President of Fine Fragrance Creation at MANE. But here is the detail that makes her the perfect match for Maddy: Nyberg is a self-taught cook who experiments with daring flavor combinations, inspired by her work.

So, we have a perfumer who thinks like a chef, handed a brief about a salted-butter madeleine spiked with aged rum? Oh yes, yes, yes! The answer is as glorious as one might dream.

Our Maddy is definitely NOT a madeleine dunked in lime-blossom tisane at Tante Léonie’s house in Combray. And that’s apparent from the first second after you spray it on your skin. The brand calls it a “mischievous urban gourmand,” and the composition delivers on the premise: frosted lemon zest glinting on top like the rim of a coupe glass; a heart of salted-butter madeleine colliding head-on with aged rum, the deep comfort of a freshly baked treat meeting the adrenaline rush of a wild night.

And then there is the sheer overdose of it all, quite literally, at a staggering 54% concentration. Maddy belongs to The Different Company’s new Extrait Extreme collection, five radical fragrances built on the paradox of intense power wrapped in pure elegance, each pushed past the 50% mark and each with its own double-trouble attitude. Salty Kiss (by Cristiano Canali) is the collection’s honey trap, a gourmand with a salty edge (the salty speculoos biscuit note is to die for!); Crazy Tubéreuse (Alexandra Monet) takes perfumery’s forbidden flower, long domesticated, and sets her loose again, all dark, leathery and unapologetically carnal; Gin-Seng (Meng Gu) plays the neo-apothecary card, rooty and tonic, an olfactory treatment you didn’t know you needed this summer; and Gothic Incense (Serge de Oliveira) swings between hot and cold, a smoky, woody, brooding, Elvira-esque potion.

This concentration pushes it firmly into “shot” territory: imagine a madeleine shot, knocked back neat. There is something almost transgressive about taking this delicate register and distilling it to a strength usually reserved for the densest ouds and ambers. It inverts the Proustian equation: instead of a delicate taste unlocking an ocean of memory, here memory itself is concentrated, spiked, and served with a deliciously dizzying kick.

I have a soft spot for perfumes that know comfort and danger are not opposites, but partners in crime, and Maddy knows it down to her buttery, rum-soaked core. She is what a Prohibition-era pâtisserie might smell like after midnight, where the password whispered through the little hatch is, naturally, “Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure.” (“For a long time, I went to bed early.”)

But don’t fret, even if the word “overdose” might make you think Maddy is best left in the drawer until the first autumn chill, she is, unexpectedly, a summer-dwelling creature. The frosted lemon and that whisper of saltiness melt beautifully into hot summer nights, with the citrus turning brighter against the heat, the salt balancing the sweetness, and the rum mingling with the crunch of toasted almonds to give the composition its irresistible fluffy texture. The result is addictive and perfectly balanced: an overdose that knows how to behave in the heat and misbehave just enough after dark.
