Statik Olfactive Vampyr Review

If you know me, you know I take vampires really seriously. I’m Romanian, for one, and I used to be a goth (read that as AM – does one really recover?), and “Transylvania” still remains my favorite cheesy introduction whenever someone asks where I’m from.

Come October 1st, I’m already working on my Halloween watchlist, putting Type O Negative’s October Rust back into heavy rotation, and considering another playthrough of Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. Released in 2004, this game is now over two decades old, which is mildly upsetting when you still think of it as your favorite game of all time, especially when gaming happens to be your more “serious” job. This mild obsession has found its way into my perfume collection, too. I have a particular weakness for dark goth scents, and the vampire clans of the World of Darkness have become my own personal way of sorting them: by atmosphere, by temperament, by the kind of creature I imagine wearing them. A perfectly reasonable filing system, if you ask me!

The Nosferatu clan gets my beloved earthy, damp patchoulis: cellar walls, mushroomy darkness, summoning the strangely cozy atmosphere of a lair where sunlight never reaches. Malkavian is where I put the stranger combinations, metallic, bloody facets tangled up with something disconcertingly sweet, a little unhinged in spirit and all the more fascinating for it. Tremere gets the incense-heavy shelf, all ritual smoke and resins while the crazy Brujah are all about leather, smoke, peppery heat, and the good old punk-rock attitude.

And then there are the Toreadors. Artists, lovers, exquisitely self-indulgent creatures with an eternity to cultivate their taste and a regrettable habit of treating humans as snacks, this is the clan of “socially-acepted vampires”.  Many were musicians, artists, and poets in their mortal lives, and they still move through human society with effortless charm, perfectly at home in the spotlight and very fond of being admired, they know how to hold an audience, how to turn admiration into influence, and how to make you feel that doing exactly what they want was your idea all along.

Statik Olfactive Vampyr? Oh, this one is SO OBVIOUSLY Toreador.

This is the vampire across the table with impeccable manners, who knows exactly when to hold your gaze, for exactly how long, and lets you think moving closer was your idea. You noticed the red flags, of course. They went beautifully with the wine. And all the blood that followed…

Chris Martin, the creative director and founder of Statik Olfactive was kind to give us insights into his creative process:

‘’So the inspiration was simple… I’ve recently been searching out fragrances that have a “gothic” edge to them… scents that push the boundary on their aesthetic, often a little more “daring” and with more unique notes, ones you don’t typically find too often. So I wanted something that wasn’t the scent of the mythical white-faced Dracula/Nosfaratu, with dust-covered coffins and dark, musty castles/dungeons… I wanted something that was modern, themed after the modern vampire. The ones that are young and with sex appeal, that walk among us, and want to bring you into their world… I had the full narrative all planned out; I just needed the right person to execute the vision. I was speaking with a good friend in the industry, and they said, “I have the PERFECT person for you to bring this to life… have you ever heard of a perfumer by the name of Arina Franzén? Check out her brand Dark Tales… I assure you that your search for the right perfumer will end there.” I looked up her brand, and KNEW INSTANTLY that this would be perfect for her. I reached out to her, got a discovery set from her to smell her work, and the rest was history, as they say. When speaking with Arina and ready to start the project, she said to me, “Don’t be surprised when I message you in about a week or so to let you know that I’ve got the first round of trial formulas ready to be sent out to you to sample, I tend to work pretty fast….” I thought she was kidding… Three days later, she messaged me and said they were done and on the way for me to evaluate. My mind was absolutely blown. I obviously had to let the juices sit to macerate and mature for about a month or so before I could properly evaluate them, but I finally smelled them all, and one of them was EXACTLY what I envisioned for this scent. It was literally a one-and-done. I’ve never seen anything like that and don’t think I ever will ever again! She is a true master of her craft!

Dark Tales was already on my “must try” list, so finding out that Arina P. Franzén was behind Vampyr gave me the perfect excuse to dive further into her world. And down this familiar rabbit hole I went, revisiting the storytelling, the historical obsessions, and the delightfully strange corners of her imagination, populated by old libraries, medieval abbeys, and floating candles. (to mention but a few of my favorite things too): ‘’ As a perfumer, I work very visually and emotionally. Before thinking about individual notes, I normally see scenes, textures, colors, characters and fragments of a story. My task is then to translate something completely intangible — an emotion, a personality, a place that may never have existed — into physical materials. And then something rather strange happens. We combine those physical substances inside a bottle, only for them to disappear again when the perfume is worn, becoming invisible in the air. In that sense, I sometimes think perfumers are both alchemists and ghost-hunters. We take something imagined, give it a temporary physical body, and then release it again as an olfactive ghost. Perfume can change the atmosphere of a room, alter someone’s perception of you, awaken a memory or create a feeling that wasn’t there seconds earlier. We are, in a way, mood-shifters. “  – Arina P. Back to our Vampyr: as I said, don’t expect the classic Nosferatu treatment. This is a Toreador (one of the 14 clans of Vampires) with cultivated taste, impeccable tailoring, and the kind of composure etiquette manuals aspire to teach. If we’re speaking in TikTok aesthetics, this is the quintessential old-money vampire. Okay, okay, make that ANCIENT money.

The opening is velvety, polished, and aristocratically inviting. Blood orange brings a bright, bittersweet edge to the red berries and ripe plum flesh, their mouthwatering richness deepened by the slow swirl of dark thick wine in a glass held between perfectly manicured fingers (complete with long, coffin-shaped nails ). Think heavy velvet curtains, low lighting, and an absinthe-like, iridescent green threading through it all. The green cognac gives that ripe fruit richness a drier edge, suggesting grape skins and fruit peel with a faintly fermented tang – think a tannic aftertaste, a little sharpness coiling beneath the sweetness. Angelica and bay rum leaf add their green, spicy bite, keeping the plushness from becoming too comfortable, a slightly unnerving edge that reminds you, even in this hedonistic den, that you are being carefully watched.

The green-eyed hunter wears an aura of flowers: violets, softly pressed together like petals between the pages of a leather-bound book. A sip of crimson wine stains the lips, making the slightly pointed canines all the more striking when the smile finally widens. And then there’s the aged blood accord, bringing something unsettlingly intimate into the picture and teasing out the metallic facets of the plush rose. Cooler green facets emerge again, this time with the earthy pull of patchouli, tree moss, and vetiver. Something in the atmosphere shifts. Beneath the flowers and fine manners, you begin to sense how carefully the trap has been laid.

As Vampyr settles closer to the skin, the hazy dream-like vision becomes far too alluring to escape. The soft-focus, musky texture of ambrette mingles with the grain of dark woods for a tactile delight that makes your fingers want to trace its invisible architecture in the air. The dark crimson edge is softened by the warm, resinous roundness of benzoin and above it, frankincense rises like a ghost from dying embers, its smoke caught in the folds of an antique velvet coat.

The shadows suit our Toreador. And, by now, you’re beginning to think they might suit you, too.

Statik Olfactive Vampyr gives its creature enough beauty to fascinate and enough strangeness to keep you coming back for more. Arina P. Franzén captures the aura of a character whose exquisite manners conceal a very old appetite, paints it in vivid shades of red, and serves it all on a bloodied silver platter.

This is a fragrance for those of us who like our hedonism a little haunted, our roses slightly bloodied, and our vampire fantasies dressed impeccably for the occasion. Needless to say, I’ve sorted out both my Halloween costume (a velvet-clad Toreador) and my  perfume.
