Vanille Rêve is the sixth perfume by Creative Director Shalini  Kumar and master perfumer Maurice Roucel (2021). They have collaborated, once again, on a perfume that is greater than the sum of the materials used. What might seem like a simple composition of vanilla, florals and anise gives us so much more. I’m picky with my vanilla-forward perfumes, I don’t want to smell like a cupcake. But Vanille Rêve is not that. It holds so much more, capturing the complexities of human desire and love. This is a vanilla perfume like no other.

Vanille Rêve blooms with a complex aura of darkness and light. A luxurious veil of vanilla wraps itself around a dark spectre of anise. This airy anise darkness vibrates with a brooding sweetness and whispers of peppery spices. Slowly sliding into the shadows of the vanilla. It’s not a jarring feeling, more the sensation of two bodies intertwined, forming one. Maurice Roucel never lets you feel the edges of Vanille Rêve, as soon as you think you have a grasp on one side, he folds you into the other. The materials he’s used play in each other’s shadows making Vanille Rêve feel smooth and luxurious, with deeply sensual textures. The vanilla is the star here, but it’s in describing its darker desires that the true form of its sensuous velvet light is revealed. Vanille Rêve is a perfume that sizzles with passion.

Vanilla and anise both share woody facets that feel like creamy sandalwood shavings. It forms a sumptuous armature that’s then draped in exotic flower petals. Vanille Rêve’s florals are masterfully woven into the vanilla and anise. Tuberose stands out for me as it brings a plump feel to the velvet texture while it’s delicious, yet delicate spice evokes desire; that magical sensation of a warm embrace as you feel your lover’s skin against your own. Its balsamic facets dive into the darkness of the anise, teasing more rich amber caresses out, while giving that warmth of two bodies as one. There’re moments in Vanille Rêve where I get almost baked shortbread biscuit qualities, I think this is the golden butteriness of Tiare flowers. Creamy florals with an intoxicating roasted cinnamon spice. Vanille Rêve feels like a slow sliding into pleasure with its alluring glow. Jasmine works almost subliminally, flickering with its seductive eyes, capturing that beautiful tension of desire between two lovers. It’s there but you can’t quite place it, it’s that feeling and vibe, bitable. These tones capture the feel of Gauguin’s Tahitian series of paintings, one of the inspirations for  Shalini Parfum Vanille Rêve.

Shalini Parfum Vanille Rêve moves like a slow tango, as its vanilla layers are swirled and lifted, more of its nuances are revealed. Vanillic balsamic facets give you flashes of a vanilla pod’s dark richness. It’s a contrast to the mouthwatering sweeter side, but Maurice Roucel never lets things fall into a traditional gourmand territory.

It is easy-to-wear yet is full of complexity. Vanille Rêve’s kaleidoscopic bouquet of white flowers keeps things in balance. Further into the dry-down you sense more of the dark anise, but as soon as you recognise it, it swirls elegantly away, leaving a soft trail of white petals that fade into a vanilla haze. The way the materials used capture both their dark and light counterpoints is stunning. Each ingredient seems to crossover and merge seamlessly, as if they have found their mirror twin. The vanilla, tropical florals and the touch of anise made me fall in love with Vanille Rêve with each spritz. It feels endless and luxurious, lasting on my skin for days, like memories of a lover’s embrace. This is a very special perfume.
