To be in awe of a presence or natural force greater than oneself is to bask in our covenant with the cosmos. Shalini Kumar of Shalini Parfum’ ninth parfum created with master perfumer Maurice Roucel, VOILE MER, achieves just that. We experience the irresistible primal pull of the ocean enwreathed in tender flowers and sea salt. VOILE MER is a bit of a departure from Monsieur Roucel’s previous collaborations with Shalini, as it’s their first aquatic oeuvre to date.

Aquatic scents are usually not my first fragrant choice: this is due to many perfumers’ overenthusiastic surdosage of Calone®. Such treatments strike me as unimaginative at best. I’m pleased to reassure those who share this sentiment that Shalini Parfum VOILE MER (translated as Veil in the Sea) is 2026’s aromatic exception. It is a minor miracle to be able to conjure the photorealism of the sea without waxing formulaic, and VOILE MER offers us a unique perspective of this genre: one which glides along the skin with a glowing, buoyant touch and substantial tenacity. It is akin to floating upon a briny floral sea breeze, caressing and weightless.

Shalini has cited several inspirations for VOILE MER. These include Vincent van Gogh’s 1888 painting entitled Zeegezicht bij Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Seascape at Saintes-Maries-of-the-Sea) – and Colette’s La Naissance du Jour (The Break of Day), a semi-autobiographical novel in which its middle-aged author finds solace in the peace and beauty of nature. Shalini also shared several compelling images of a mythological sea creature entwined in an underwater forest of seaweed: lithe, comely, and graceful. My mind’s eye filled with potential possibilities, as the beings depicted in these photographs were beneficent and beautiful. Many otherworldly sea entities are either malign, naughty, or downright dangerous: rusalkas, nixies, melusines, or undines. Shalini’s lovely half-fish, half-woman must be a mermaid or one of the sea nymph Nereids, who represent all oceanic aspects associated with kindness and beauty. One of the most famous Nereids was Thetis, mother to the great Greek hero immortalized in Homer’s Iliad: Achilles. I love to imagine the 50 daughters of Nereus, gathered around their father, regaling him with their melodious voices as they dance for his pleasure upon the ocean floor.

VOILE MER evokes a sparking Aegean Sea, the expanse of the Mediterranean. This parfum abounds with vivid pastel hues of green and blue which evoke glittering foam-kissed waves. It is as far from Homer’s wine-dark sea as one can get – salt water so clear that one can see what lies beneath. Amidst the crystalline salinity of a mineralic sea salt accord and a pellucid jasmine and muguet (each executed with a lilting delicacy), we are drawn into the entangled depths of seaweed. A masterful hand is required when employing seaweed absolute, of which there are several varieties, including a colorless one: it is a potent material whose attributes are best encountered in dilution.

Complex, iodinic, even phenolic – seaweed is to the nose what umami is to the tongue. It can evince a smokiness, savory and even leathery facets; some noses detect undertones of moss, or even mushroom. As unusual as seaweed’s scent profile is, it is magical when merged with oakmoss. Earthiness, the cool dampness of the forest floor take on another visage entirely, one which is deeply mysterious and satisfying. Monsieur Roucel seasons his twilit duo with a warm amber tone, lending a radiance to the entire composition. Jasmine and muguet enliven the olfactory palette and prevent any hint of heft, providing us with an incredibly long lasting and ethereal parfum. Even if you traditionally eschew aquatic scents, I would encourage you to sample VOILE MER for yourselves. This moving fragrance may change your thinking entirely- as it did mine.
