Scents of Man Bluebell Ritual

There’s something about the name Bluebell Ritual that made me stop before I even smelled the perfume. A ritual suggests repetition, something we return to because it gives us pleasure, comfort, or perhaps a moment to ourselves. After spending time with  this pure perfume that name feels particularly well chosen.

Andrea creates her  “Scents of Man” fragrances on the Isle of Man, and while I don’t want to force a landscape onto a fragrance simply because of where it was made, Bluebell Ritual does have an outdoors quality that immediately caught me. Certain floral perfumes seem to belong outdoors. They need air around them, a little green underfoot, perhaps even the suggestion of cool soil and leaves. This is one of those perfumes. Not a manicured garden or an arranged bouquet, but something greener and a little wilder.

The first thing I smell is bluebell; it has an almost hyacinth-like greenness, with far more body than I expected. The Manx name for bluebell is “Gleih-muc.” Bluebell can sometimes become a vague watery floral in perfume, pretty but difficult to hold onto. Andrea gives it presence. It’s bright and distinctly floral, yet there’s a coolness running through it. More importantly, I can smell the green around the flower. Green stems give the opening a freshly broken, almost sappy quality. Bergamot and grapefruit are there, but thankfully not trying to turn the opening into another sparkling citrus introduction. It simply lets in some light.

As Scents of Man Bluebell Ritual settles on my skin, it begins to change. Magnolia, jasmine, neroli, and heliotrope move in, and it becomes noticeably creamier. Magnolia has that beautiful fleshy petal quality, jasmine brings warmth, and heliotrope softens the edges with its familiar powdery sweetness. Yet underneath it all, I can still smell green.

Labdanum, orris root, violet leaf, and a lovely vetiver create a darker green thread that runs remarkably deep into the perfume. Violet leaf is especially effective here. Its cool, slightly metallic character contrasts with the creaminess of the flowers, while orris adds something quieter and earthier. I find this part of Bluebell Ritual particularly interesting because Andrea doesn’t allow the fragrance to become simply “a pretty floral.” There are leaves here. Stems. Shade. Earth.

There’s a jammy, wispy port element that I notice emerging among the florals, a darker sweetness that is unexpected after the freshness of the opening. I don’t experience it as a conventional fruit note. It is more like berries growing wild among flowers and greenery, their ripeness adding just enough sweetness to change the air. Bluebell Ritual becomes warmer, but it takes its time getting there. And I love that about it.Much later I begin catching little flashes of the almond note from heliotrope, at first fleeting enough that I wonder whether I imagined them. Then I smell it again. Soft, nutty, slightly creamy. The heliotrope gradually melts into Peru balsam, and this is where Bluebell Ritual becomes something quite different from the perfume I first sprayed. Peru balsam brings a deep, honeyed warmth with touches of resin, vanilla and wood. After the cool bluebell, damp greenery and creamy flowers, that warmth feels wonderful. It doesn’t erase what came before. Somehow traces of green remain, which makes the balsamic sweetness feel even richer. This long dry-down may be my favorite part.

By then the bluebell itself has become faint, but I haven’t forgotten it. I can still trace the journey back to those first cool flowers and broken green stems. The almond note from the heliotrope, Peru balsam, and vetiver seems almost sun-warmed by comparison, close to the skin and quietly calming. And perhaps that’s where the “ritual” in Bluebell Ritual finally makes sense to me.

By the time Bluebell Ritual has been on my skin for several hours, the bluebell itself has become more of a memory, but I can still find my way back to those first cool flowers and green stems. It feels less like the perfume has changed direction and more like the day has simply moved on.

Perhaps that’s where the word “ritual” makes the most sense to me. Morning begins with bluebells, cool leaves and broken green stems. As the air warms, magnolia and jasmine open, softened by heliotrope and touched by elderberry. Eventually, those cooler colors slowly give way to honeyed Peru balsam and the resinous warmth of labdanum. Scents of Man Bluebell Ritual begins in blue and green. Hours later, those colors have turned to honey, resin, and gold. For me, the beauty of this perfume lies in everything that happens in between.
