LA-based Luckyscent, founded online in 2002, is THE premier online destination in the USA for all niche, artistic, and hard-to-find brands and is certainly the go-to destination for many perfumistas. Founders Franco Wright and Adam Eastwood expanded the business by opening the first Scent Bar in Los Angeles in 2006, with a second following a few years later in downtown Los Angeles a few years later. They opened Scent Bar NYC on October 1st, 2019. Shortly after the pandemic hit and the city started to reopen in the summer of 2020, I took my first post-pandemic subway ride down to the boutique to write up a profile with former store manager Vijay Uttam.
With a population of 2.577 million, versus Manhattan’s 1.629 million, it was just a matter of time before Brooklyn, specifically Williamsburg, would become the new scent mecca. In my opinion, that took place in 2023 when it emerged as a full-fledged scent destination. It was D.S. and Durga, the original Williamsburg pioneers, who opened their shop in 2020 and got it rolling. One after another, in rapid succession, Byredo, Le Labo, Diptyque, Glossier, Credo, Malin & Goetz, CHANEL, Olfactory NYC, and Stéle followed suit. The Scent Bar boutique is a natural fit for the area and opened late April 2026.

Madison Gates, Store Manager, Georgia Wright, and Walter Higginbotham at Scent Bar Brooklyn
I recently met up with Scent Bar Brooklyn Manager Madison Gates to show me around their newest boutique. Formerly she was at the NoLita store as assistant manager. Madison was tapped to head up the Brooklyn boutique when it opened.

I had many questions, and Madison had the answers. Madison informed me that the groundwork for a Brooklyn outpost began over the summer of 2024. “The location came pretty fast, and the lease was signed right away. It had an openness about it. And the back patio was a plus (and hard to come by in Brooklyn). We all came together as a team to get this place together. Everyone jumped in; Franco and Adam came in from LA, and, along with the staff, all took turns setting things up and running, making sure the shelves were curated perfectly.”

I enquired what the inventory balance was relative to the Lucky Scent website, and it turns out that Scent Bar Brooklyn carries 35 to 40 percent of the perfumes from the website. And, Scent Bar Brooklyn has the largest footprint of the four locations. It is a great space for events, with the patio adding a special touch and the long, railroad-style layout. How many guests can fit? Madison said somewhere between 60 and 80. She mentioned that they already hosted two events to date with Marissa Zappas and Regime des Fleurs founder Alia Raza. (Europerfumes showcased Mancera Mochi Musk for their next event).

What is the difference between NoLita and this boutique? Madison told me “while the NoLita store is more consultation-based due to size, Scent Bar Brooklyn gives customers more room to explore. In NoLita, we get more tourists; they buy more name brands: Creed, Parfums de Marly, Initio, Xerjoff, BDK. Here we get more locals, those who live or work in the area; they come on the lunch break or work from home. They like to buy more small or local niche brands. They like to come check out the space. In Nolita, I would sell vanilla all day. Bianco Latte (Giardini di Toscana) is a best seller; I’m selling Gris Charnel (BDK) all day; here it is different. There is no specific best seller, although smaller niche brands are excelling here such as Liis, Regime des Fleurs, Stora Skuggan, to name a few.” I asked her, Do you feel there is any competition here with other stores? “No, I don’t think so. Our clientele is very loyal. They come in and have a great experience with us, and they come back. “

Since I had mentioned Andrea Maack as a fave when touring the scent walls, Madison informed me that Scent Bar Brooklyn would be hosting an Andrea Maack event on Wednesday, August 5th. I made a note and returned for the event.

The following rainy night was appropriate for the vibe of the brand and, as expected, well attended. I had first met Andrea Maack at the now shuttered Henri Bendel’s for the launch of Coven in 2013, and I have been captivated by her scents since. I looked forward to reconnecting with her. And, I especially appreciated the time she spent with me going through the fragrances.
