Creative Director Neela Vermeire of Neela Vermeire Creations and master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour devoted a great deal of time and thought to developing an extrait de parfum which would illuminate from within, revealing an innate resilience: their latest fragrant collaboration, NEITH. This dusky, atmospheric beauty debuted at this year’s Esxence Milano and garnered considerable attention.

Who is Neith? In addition to the more commonly recognized interpretations of her name – water, Divine Mother, The Terrifying One among them – Neith also means “I came from myself”, and” the one who existed before existence”. This deity inhabited many roles in Egyptian life. In early texts she is described as an “Opener of the Ways”, a pseudonym also used for the god Wepwawet. Originating during the New Kingdom, Neith is referred to as “The Mother and Father of all things”. The ancient Egyptian goddess Neith possessed many powers, beginning with her ability to create the universe by weaving the things she dreamed up on a magical loom: hence her name, The Weaver of Fate. She is an intriguing amalgam of creation, wisdom, and warfare – and the goddess Pallas Athena shares all of these attributes. Both Arachne and Neith are associated with spiders (Neith was credited with creating the first spider to help weave Osiris’ shroud). Further commonalities cite red as their signature color: according to the ancient Romans, Minerva – the Roman name for the goddess Athena – is depicted as wearing a red tunic into battle, and Neith is always shown wearing the iconic Red Crown of Lower Egypt. It’s fascinating to contemplate the similarities between these mythological figures.

“Light must come from inside. You cannot ask the darkness to leave; you must turn on the light.” ~ Sogyal Rinpoche
NEITH is deliciously complex and nuanced and cannot be reduced to a facile categorization; this is its fundamental strength. That which commences with a brilliant, fiery introduction, not unlike a shooting star – moves through layers of noble materials which have been cherished throughout the ages, until it eventually resembles an indelible susurration upon the skin. As such, NEITH is an aromatic web worthy of an Athena or Arachne, but it is not subject to the constraints of time: it is equally at home in the annals of history as it is in today’s modern world. Provocative black pepper heightens the senses, followed by lemony frankincense’s charm. Neela’s beloved rose is accompanied by a eugenol-rich carnation which bridges the bright with the profoundly earthy and resinous. It manages, however, to avoid the ponderous quality from which other base-intense fragrances frequently suffer. We have reached the point where scrutinizing listed notes ceases to truly represent the perfume. A cursory glance would lead one to anticipate a weighty, perhaps somewhat morose scent – and that would be an error. An abundance of myrrh, most certainly – both arid and sweet (opoponax) – benefits from the measured presence of vetiver. Vetiver, in turn, augments the smokiness of leathery cypriol, oud, castoreum, and labdanum. Cedar and sandalwood play off one another harmonically, as they are wont to do – and a soupçon of vanilla and ambergris lend a smooth, curvaceous melding of its fine elements. NEITH wears as a testament to the inner radiance which lurks beneath shadow. It glows with the hopefulness which accompanies the deeply mysterious.
