Fioriture, Laboratorio Olfattivo’s new collection with the ‘Parfumeur Jardinier’, Jean-Claude Ellena is a trio of new floral perfumes that renews his olfactive and personal connection with Italy. The Fioriture collection explores and captures the olfactory beauty of the rich culture, land and light, and the olfactive experience of nature’s lush gardens, with the perfumes capturing the floral scents. Jean-Claude Ellena’s “paints them” allowing the experience of their beauty to shine. Each of the perfumes rose: (Rose me Twice), carnation (In_Carnation) and jasmine (Jasminade) are deeply rooted in perfumery’s tradition, with Jean-Claude Ellena bringing them into our contemporary world. Editor Ermano Picco was at Diffusioni Olfattive in Turin and met with Jean-Claude Ellena. In_Carnation lives forever in his memory of the event.

Laboratorio Olfattivo Jasminade is Jean-Claude Ellena’s ode to the jasmine flower, from dawn to dusk. It’s his olfactory headspace not just of a moment, but also time; its complexities blossom throughout the wear. Jasminade is a jasmine for lovers of this sumptuous floral.

Tropical aromas glide over your skin as Jasminade blooms. It feels crisp, like biting into an apple, that green watery freshness with a hint of sweetness. You can feel the jasmine flowers sparkle moving on a cool breeze, light and airy, both sensual and soothing. I get a subtle burst of its heady allure for a moment, a wild animal lurking  behind the petals. Before Jasminade returns to its smoother easy feel, it feels like washes of watercolour are sketching out the shapes of the flowers, lighter colours and aromas are used almost like a jasmine CO2 extraction with a deft use of benzyl salicylate to highlight the tropical fruitiness before the light fades as the golden hour grows near.

Slowly more of Jasminade’s heady white floral scents are revealed. Soft clove-like spices bring warmth to the coolness of the opening. Jasminade’s petals glow as the intoxicating scent from the tiny flowers is released. Darker, more intense colours are washed over the opening’s lighter shades before Jean-Claude Ellena switches it up bringing in verdant tone and  jasmine plant’s vines and leaves appear. Cool greens lean into minty freshness with a gentle evening chill. It gives Laboratorio Olfattivo Jasminade a wild feel as the vines and leaves take over, shielding the delicate petals. It’s a beautiful moment to experience, as if Jean-Claude Ellena pulls our focus back from just the flower to the whole experience of the plant and lush garden in which it grows. Subtle gardenia facets linger at the edges, waxy textures bring a sensual feel to Jasminade, as the opening’s jasmine petals start to release their heady fragrance. This waxiness reminds me of the traditional enfleurage techniques used to extract the flowers scent. Soft balsamic kisses join the clove adding shimmer to the spices; it’s all done deftly, ensuring that the jasmine flower is the star. The use of cool and warm tones is a brilliant touch, revealing all of jasmine’s facets to us in Jasminade. Orange blossom is also cleverly used to give the jasmine more body with its velvety musky texture adding shading to this beautiful composition.

Jasminade’s final dry down lingers like the scent of jasmine in the evening air. Musks purr and wrap you in voluptuous silks. Jasminade’s indolic facets hum with warm cinnamic spices paired with faint embers of clove,  so that you remember the feel of the sun’s warmth on skin as the moon lights the sky.  Clove teases out a gentle darkness allowing the heady delicate petals of the jasmine to feel luminous. Jasminade has a very elegant and commanding feel, confident and flowing with ease, like layers of silks moving with a breeze. Faint memories of tropical fruits merge with the steam of tea leaves revealing more subtle complexities within a seemingly simple composition. Jean-Claude Ellena again adds more roundness and depth filling in the spaces giving us another exploration of jasmine revealing all its textures. The classic combination of orange blossom and white musks provide a transparent structure for Jasminade’s flowers to shine on. It makes you want to draw closer, feeling like an embrace that doesn’t let you go. Jasminade is stunning ode to jasmine’s brilliant facets and Jean-Claude Ellena captures its magic from dusk to dawn.
