INFINIMENT COTY PARIS J’AI TROIS AMOURS via the brand

The day I went to sample the INFINIMENT COTY PARIS line it was broiling in New York City. It was the kind of day where you could fry an egg on the sidewalk, and probably on my head. I was a hot, sweaty mess when I landed at the doorstep of the cool–literally and figuratively–sleek spa La Maison Orveda, where the collection is housed. The staff was incredibly courteous and led my disheveled self to the back where the absolutely gorgeous floral sculptural display stunned me. I had seen pictures, but it is such a different experience in person. Beautiful, intricate, and when you come up close to the center of the sculpture, the scent will spray out delicately toward you. I felt like a princess in a fairy tale coming across this fragrant, sculpted garden.

On to those fragrances in a moment but first, a slight detour into my personal fragrance preferences. For a long time I upheld this fiction about myself that I did not like anything too sweet because sweet notes get amplified on my skin and many times fragrances would end up smelling sugary or cloying, which I did not enjoy. I am a contradiction in terms, though, because after the chypre, my favorite genre of perfume is the much-maligned gourmand. I even wrote once that I did not like to smell like dessert… except when apparently I do.

That brings us to the Coty scent that grabbed my nose that day and wouldn’t let go: INFINIMENT COTY PARIS J’AI TROIS AMOURS (literal translation: “I have three loves”), a banana flower scent whose description by Coty begins as “delicious sparkles of laughter.” It is a sparkly, fruity floral that is absolutely perfect for hot, humid days. I had no prior experience with banana flower as a note and was surprised to find it leaned almost into mango, which is one of my favorite fruit notes. Fun fact: the first few fragrances I owned before I knew anything about perfumes were in the Escada summer line, and I distinctly recall the mango in Island Kiss. I’m from the tropics and in that heat and humidity, you need fresh, fruity, citrus, sparkle!

This is in large part why INFINIMENT COTY PARIS J’AI TROIS AMOURS jumped out at me, but something else I realized upon further research is that one of the perfumers for J’AI TROIS AMOURS  is Alberto Morillas, who has created some of my favorite perfumes like CK One and Gucci’s Mémoire d’une Odeur. Morillas also created the best-selling Acqua di Giò for Armani, so he knows his way around the type of scents people want to wear in the hot sun. Do yourself a favor and go down the rabbit hole of Morillas’ oeuvre. He is prolific and masterful. Here he is paired with Honorine Blanc who has the market cornered on sweet, elegant scents. They make a great duo.

For this line INFINIMENT COTY PARIS has three phases or categories under which it places specific fragrances: I Am Dawn, I Am Day, and I Am Dusk. J’AI TROIS AMOURS falls under I Am Dawn, which includes their brightest, freshest fragrances. (Another perfume in this category that I enjoyed was MATIN DE JADE, a green tea scent with a lovely ginger note, but really, this entire line is so carefully crafted, I would recommend stopping by La Maison Orveda to give them all a sniff.) J’AI TROIS AMOURS opens with that bright banana flower accord, and then leans into a brilliant jasmine. The brand describes it as a triple-origin jasmine extract, which may be another nod to the three loves in the name. This is when I realized exactly why this scent stood out to me: I love anything jasmine, whether it’s fresh and light like this fragrance, or heavier and indolic. It tickles me that I can wear a sparkling and bright jasmine like this in the dead heat of summer. What could be more perfect than summer, sunshine, and smelling beautiful? Three loves indeed!
