Future Society Wandering Rain is a stunning exploration into the scent of rain before it falls, hitting the ground and releasing the smell we associate with it, petrichor.  Michael Nordstand captured the rain before this moment and analysed the molecules finding 46 microbial molecules and 74 scent ones. It’s said that a drop of water has the potential to hold all the information of the world within its structure. Michael Nordstand was the perfect perfumer to take these findings and turn them into an sophisticated and poetic perfume. I used to think I could smell the snow before it fell, there was a cold pinch, a metallic sharpness in my nose that signaled to me it was on the way. Wandering Rain makes me think of that moment as it opens, but perfumer Michael Nordstand conjures much more with a beautiful use of materials.

Eucalyptus delivers a minty airiness that captures the sensation of a cold breeze giving Wandering Rain an invigorating chill. Its subtle sweetness is amplified with a sweet juicy pear. You get this surreal duality of wetness with a dry pear flesh texture; it conjures clouds in my head when I smell it. Fluffy and cotton like but in a playful way. It’s also a lovely foreshadowing of the iris in the dry down. Wandering Rain conceals numerous delicate fruity undertones, courtesy of blue lotus. Dewy lychee and pale cherry introduce red hues that dance across the aquatic greens and blues, forming a musk cloud around the wearer. These elements also reveal a waxy quality, like a raindrop’s protective shell gathering moisture from the cloud. The way Michael Nordstand composes here is through soft shimmering tonal colours with transparent and textural qualities. Wandering Rain is handled with the delicate precision of a watercolour painting, yet possesses a fullness and ethereal weightlessness, as though we’re suspended within the cloud itself.

As Wandering Rain settles, the eucalyptus unveils its deeper earthy green undertones. Violet leaf enriches this character while opening up the composition. The pear dissolves into a delicate sweet mist, with orris introducing a refined powdery quality. The iris brings back the blues and gives Wandering Rain a quiet elegance. Imagine fine pale blue silks tinged with greens and subtle red hues drifting in the air weightlessly. It’s such a stunning effect that I get lost within it. Feeling the cool fresh watery cloud rather than being able to grasp its scent. Yet little anchors pull me back as this is a  olfactive poetry.

Tea serves as a brilliant metaphor that Nordstrand employs, selected because it mirrors rain’s transformation cycle. Beginning in the earth, rising and evolving, then transitioning through water into vapor.  Seeping and shifting through its life’s journey. Rain’s perpetual cycle embodies that poetic capacity that it can hold the information of the world within its small drop. sage and vetiver notes emerge, warming against my skin. They evoke the sensation of tea’s steam as its aromatic qualities release in a hushed vaporous whisper. Within Wandering Rain, earthy tea aromatics blend harmoniously with tender florals. A  golden touch of mimosa and refreshingly cool violets. Wandering Rain keeps its fresh, watery airy character throughout, yet it has evolved into an elegant iris- forward musk perfume that evokes  memories of summer rain. Wandering Rain represents a fusion of artistic vision and scientific precision creating an elegiac perfume. This is the rain.
