Fugazzi Pomegranoudh by Olya Bar

I don’t reach for the word sexy. It’s a lazy word, mostly, the shortcut people use when they haven’t bothered to find the more precise one. But Fugazzi’s newest release, Pomegranoudh, has made me break my own rule, and I won’t apologize for long. When you smell it, you’ll forgive me. The US launch event which took place recently in NYC reflected that mood completely: a red-lit room, spritzes of the fragrance passed alongside pomegranate-infused margaritas, a saxophone playing low, the perfect backdrop for the scent.

The premise alone tells you where this is headed. Pomegranate, the fruit of fertility, split open and heavy with seed and oud, the most sensual material in the perfumer’s vocabulary. Put those two in conversation and the result feels almost predetermined. What surprises me is how good the conversation turns out to be.

It opens on juice. Ripe, tart pomegranate, so saturated it seems to ooze, the kind that drips and stains and runs slow down the back of the throat. Then the fruit deepens: a bite of something redder, freshly picked strawberries and red currants, fragrant and just shy of too sweet. And then, unhurried, it lets you fall into the oud. Decadent, never animalic. Airy and musky, with a whisper of salt as it begins to dry down. Amber and patchouli hold the base in place, grounding a composition that, left to its own sweetness, might have tipped into dessert. They keep it adult.

I’ve been chasing the perfect pomegranate for years. Most I found were beautiful from a distance and hollow up close, I’d get the scent, but when I bit in, there was nothing there. All gleam, no flesh. A disappointment, every time. Pomegranoudh is the first to offer both: the shine, and the density behind it.

And then there’s the heat. Don’t be timid with this one in summer. Douse your skin on the hottest day of the year and let it bloom, oud has always lived and breathed best in warmth, when the skin runs hot and the air runs hotter. That’s when Fugazzi Pomegranoudh fully opens, slow and a little indecent, exactly as it should.
