I’ve been a fan of Jónsi’s music long before Sigur Rós Ágætis byrjun was released. It’s an album that became the soundtrack to my formative years at art school. Listening to it puts me in a certain head space, time stretching out both forwards and back. Sigur Rós’ music has a slow intensity that feels like an atmosphere. Jónsi’s composition KOT holds that same sensation, like his scent sounds are washing over you. KOT bathes you in the edges of the forest, near the end of the season’s harvest.

KOT was made collaboration with Farmers Market, an acclaimed Icelandic design studio, a perfume crafted from their mutual vision of outdoor gatherings in Iceland’s distinctive landscape. I’ve yet to visit Iceland but have spent a lot of time in various parts of Scandinavia. KOT captures the feel of nature that I felt there. Wooden aromas surround you as the soft scent of smoke lingers in the air. Nature’s green aromas add brighter tones to the wooden hues. You feel the vastness of nature the way the perfume feels drawn out and spacious. KOT feels like you smelling over the horizon line catching the scent of the next house as they celebrate the harvest. You feel the warmth of happiness radiate from KOT as you wrap its packaging, a stunning neckerchief/Skrudur from Farmers Market, around you.

KOT opens like you’re stepping outside into the country air. There’s a clean freshness stained with light wooded tones and pale blond hay facets. It feels so cosy making me think of how houses smell after being cleaned with Norwegian green soap. It’s a fresh cedar aroma with the hay adding a subtle sweetness. A soft haze of smoke adds a subtle density leaning into the hay’s texture. It’s the scent of smoke from a distance, a signal that pulling you closer.

KOT’s smokiness never overwhelms, the cool air accord keeps it diffused. Yet when you get more intimate with KOT there’s a delicious soft char whispering of darkness. Jónsi elevates the hay’s sweetness, bringing out a nutty vanilla to balance the composition. KOT wears like an elegant subtly complex drone. It’s modulated with subtle hooks and rhythms that keep you wanting to smell it more. KOT feels happy, like a smile that appears when you remember something lovely.

Toasted marzipan’s sweetness plays nicely with KOT’s sensual suede side. You feel its nap glide gently over you. Taking the hays texture and making it something you want to melt into. Wood smoke wraps around you like a soft furry animal. It’s a white smoke tinged with greys flickering with reds and woody greens. Cypress gives KOT a fresh, clean earthiness with a crisp woodiness adding more to the fire’s smoke with a subtle balsamic kiss, as cedar adds more logs to the bonfire off in the distance. It picks out more of the vanillic facets of KOT giving it this delicious but subtle sweetness. While the hay brings out a sun-dried fresh feel. KOT captures the feeling of happiness and togetherness while being spacious. Like a long walk outdoors when the sun never fades.
