Darren Alan Perfumes introduced Big Island in his July subscription, that stirred memories of Maui I thought were forgotten.  It is a perfume that reminds me of somewhere I felt total tranquility. Big Island opens with a brilliance from the first flash of bergamot and lime leaf. A cheerful citrus combination reminds me of the vibrant energy I get from the morning sun as it rises and enfolds me . Tucked into it carefully, mango is not quite ripe but crisp, lively, and vibrant, adding a dewy balance. And that subtle warmth of rum just settles in, deepening everything. It’s a combination that feels familiar even if you’ve never been anywhere tropical. It’s the kind of scent that makes people pause because it reminds them of something they can’t quite place.

The floral heart is so perfectly blended, and Big Island becomes even more elegantly nostalgic to me. Pikake, “the flower of love,” with its soft, intimate quality clings to my skin, plumeria brings a creamy, floral, tropical note with hints of ripe peach/apricot and soft jasmine-like sweetness. Together they create a an intricate white floral, imbued with the Island’s richness. Pineapple threads through it with vibrancy that feels sun warmed rather than sugary, enhancing the florals’ radiance.

Darren Alan Perfumes Big Island evokes my teenage days at the end of a beach day. Coconut smells mildly sweet as it floats on driftwood that is worn and weathered makes me think of old boardwalks. Soft hints of musks, clean like the hush that settles when the sun sinks into the ocean, and sea moss with that beachy mineral whisper reminds me of tide pools and the coolness that comes after heat.  I didn’t realize I still carried the stretch of coastline in the recesses of my mind, a moment when the air was clear and the world felt more unhurried. It has a vintage vibe in the sense that it feels lived‑in, as only Darren Alan can do.

Big Island opens cheerful, then becomes deeper and sensual, a tropical hush that doesn’t just sit on the skin, it stirs things. I relive walking the Maui shoreline with my sister long ago and our frequent jaunts from Lahaina to Hana, that 64-mile stretch of the Hana Highway in Maui with its twisty mountain curves; it was breathtaking with its dense tropical rainforest, waterfalls, bamboo groves, and black sandy beaches.

I found it interesting how friends and total strangers reacted when I wore it; they would pause, tilt their heads, then breathe again. It was as if they were reaching for something in their own past: a summer morning, a place, a feeling. For me, Darren Alan Perfumes Big Island was a reminder of emotions, ease, and moments that linger long after they’re gone. It is a piece of my personal narrative  that I wear, one I remember, and one I share without speaking a word. And as a good perfume can do with olfactive storytelling it invites others to revisit their own memories or to create new ones.
