Danner & Flemming with perfumer Antoine Lie takes orris from soil to scent with their trio of perfumes Iris Poulsard, Iris Altesse and Iris Trousseau, each containing an overdose of their very own grown orris and released yearly in a limited-edition batch, with numbers dependent on how well the orris harvest went. The trio of Danner & Flemming millésimes take their names from grape varieties, making the link to wines stronger, as each yearly vintage has subtle differences due to the rich naturals just as the grapes effect each wine. Quite like wine and their grapes, the yearly orris yield is determined by microvariations in the climate and soil chemistry giving variations in the flowers root. There’s 2.5% Bavarian Gernanica orris butter and iris absolute in Danner & Flemming Iris Trousseau which is limited to only 711 bottles. I first smelled Danner & Flemming Iris Trousseau 2025 which blew me away, rich and deep full of floral powdery orris and creamy woods. The new 2026 Iris Trousseau has some subtle differences when applied on skin, even though Antoine Lie’s composition stays the same. The 2026 vintage has a bit more power and feels slightly creamier more in the sensation of its texture, like wine’s mouth feel. Iris Trousseau 2026 vintage is like a slightly heavier weight of silk with a very pleasing density and a touch less woods.

It’s worth noting the elegantly designed new packaging is hand-numbered with a unique slice of Bavarian orris included, plus pure orris essence in a small vial in the highest dosage, (Trousseau is at 10%). The love for orris in all its forms is held within this beautiful presentation, Antoine Lie spotlights iris for us to enjoy in all the millésime creations. Iris Trousseau 2026 really shows off Danner & Flemming’s Bavarian Germanica; Antoine Lie sculpts the iris, teasing out its nuances, creating shade and tones while merging woods with the floral facets making Iris Trousseau an absolute joy to wear.

The iris feels decadent as its cascades over shaved flakes of hazelnut, the sweet and spicy cardamon enters like a soft breeze evoking lustrous fabric softly gliding over your skin as you experience  all of Iris Trousseau’s orris facets. A lovely subtle woodiness adds a gentle suede-like nap texture feeling as the cardamon moves the iris’s petals. Citruses give a delicate shimmer infusing  the perfume with freshness and sparkle. Iris Trousseau beautifully captures the sensation of a silk moving over you in slow motion, wrapping you in opulence as the orris shines. Please keep the idea of pillowy powdery silks in your head as you read this, as Antoine Lie carves out textures and tones as the dry down begins.

Iris Trousseau slowly opens up as violet leaf unfurls introducing a subtle floral greenery, creating an ozonic and spacious impression as cardamon expands and enhances the sensation. Violet leaf pays homage to Iris Trousseau’s name’s sake, referencing the Trousseau grapes’ violet floral facet while within the perfume bathes us in the powdery magic of iris and orris. Iris Trousseau has an array of sensual textures making the wear feel luxurious, its floral softness and shaved woods adding elegant nuances. The way it wraps around you is reminiscent of the mouthfeel of wine, coating your palate with a rich, rounded flavour, but here it’s the scent profile capturing your senses.

Vetiver and hazelnuts add a beautiful modulation to the composition giving a subtle nutty warmth, feeling closer to a change in tone foreshadowing what’s to come. Iris Trousseau somehow feels even more buttery and soft as sandalwood beautifully brings out woody tones while harmonising with the iris. It sketches the naked skin while the woods give more body to the perfume while facets enhancing the overall luxurious feel. The violet leaf also brings out a subtle sweetness, chocolate undertones whisper in your ear as you bathe in sumptuous orris. Opulence is fully realised, resting within this lustrous cloud.

Tonka bean’s sweet and nutty tones melt into the orris, and gingerbread-like aromas enhance Iris Trousseau’s sandalwood’s woody vanilla elements giving the iris a very pleasing density, like gently biting on your lover’s shoulder. The sandalwood skin sensation expands, used beautifully to engage and elongate the iris’s characteristics as it blossoms around you, opening like a flower. Pencil shavings of cedar add body while pushing more of the woody facets in the dry down, although iris is still the star of the show.

Much like a fine wine, Iris Trousseau 2026 envelops you in its aura, which lingers on your skin. That beautiful cardamom spice allows those green tones of the violet leaf to shimmer through the gauzy iris cloud. This is undoubtedly one of the most exquisite and sensual iris perfumes I ever worn. Danner & Flemming and Antoine Lie capture the magic of orris from soil-to-scent; Iris Trousseau 2026  is shortlisted for my Best of Scent this year.
