For the celebration of their tenth anniversary BDK Parfums has launched the new Collection Studio series, a trio of Absolu de Parfums (40% -48% concentration) with perfumer Jordi Fernández interpreting David Benedek’s life-long relationship with fashion and textiles, highlighting three different materials used in haute couture. Fashion has always been an inspiration for David Benedek, creative director and founder of BDK Parfums, an early influence was his grandmother who dressed in the elegance of YSL and Courrèges, and he spent time in Marrakech and in his home city of Paris. Perfume is like clothing, in the way the scent moves adding that invisible layer by setting mood and tone. David Benedek chose silk, leather and metal for Jordi Fernandez to interpret in the new Collection Studio line.
Stellar Silk is a sleek opulent iris with creamy woods and resins. Silver Ceremony is summer glam with glistening citruses, flickering their sequined light over florals with a rich woody structure and BDK Parfums Oud Paradisio plays with darker tones of leather stained with a regal purple hue. The trio of Absolu de Parfums from the Collection Studio captures the luxury of high fashions materials and for me conjures images of French disco and the clubs of the 1970s, a time of Parisian chic. Something about the sumptuousness and quality of the ingredients: the fruits of Oud Paradisio– the glitter ball sequin citruses of Silver Ceremony and Stellar Silk’s sinuous iris elegance dancing to the music makes me think of Cerrone, Amanda Lear, Claude François and Patrick Hernandez’s music. The Collection Studio has that flow of space disco with its lavish orchestral string arrangements and heavy grooves, while its brighter melodies capture your nose and make you want to dance. Personally, I like the darkness of the dance floor where the disco lights illuminate the edges leaving shadows as the needle hits the groove.
There’s a touch of camp, in the best way to the trio, capturing that 70s’ vibe with darkness and light glinting with intense colours of the Parisian discotheques, but is never retro.

Bright citrus lights flash over dark forms as Oud Paradisio’s melody starts to play. It’s an explosive start with fresh green bergamot meeting a pineapple fruitiness, as cacao adds a light dusting of sweetness. It’s like the most delicious ice cream that slowly melts into a swirl of smoke. Typically, I find pineapple challenging in fragrances, but here, perfumer Jordi Fernández employs it deftly, foreshadowing the Thai oud that emerges in the base. A cocktail of tropical fruits with a dash of blackcurrant adds to the burst of bergamot. Somalia incense also teases out fresh greens while giving a sensuality to the composition, a gentle smokiness like the touch of leather gliding over your skin. BDK Parfums Oud Paradisio is giving opulence in the darkness of the club where extravagant, bejeweled costumes are reflecting the light as the rhythm intensifies, revealing glimpses of a leather-clad figure dancing in the shadows.

Oud Paradisio’s green incense slowly transitions into a floral lustre, as if roses are blooming on the dance floor. Honeyed aromas pick up on apple pie sweetness adding subtle pink hues to the growing dark purple leather oud. More velvety tones arrive as the high-end leather catches the light- spices and hints of tea flicker warmth as the fruity aromas grow deeper reminding me of baked apples and stone fruits which amplify the Thai oud. This rose feels abstract, deconstructed and swirls amidst the shades of purple leather, accentuating its edges as its silky petals gracefully move across the leather’s smooth texture. Oud Paradisio captures the exquisite tension between the rigid surface of leather and the delicate floral elements, creating a chiaroscuro effect in how it wears.

Earthy saffron enhances the deep leather shades while the pink rose illuminates its smooth lustre. It’s a high energy moment that beautifully intertwines with the rhythm. Subtle green facets add contrast to the darker hues of the base, as cacao forms the velvet nap of the leather’s reverse side, teasing out more sensual textures. A powdery creamy sensation envelops you with a gourmand twist, but in that well-balanced chic way of the French patisseries where things are never to sweet, just a perfect blend.

It’s in the final dry down where the oud of Oud Paradisio finally hits centre stage, Jordi Fernández cleverly enhancing its baked fruity facets- think apple pie and sour sweet tropical fruits all in one with a side of soft blonde aged woods.

The Thai oud has been lurking there all through the wear of Oud Paradisio and as the melody pulls away- the leather aromas and patchouli woody tones let the rhythm grow. Animalic touches tease those nearby in a flirty way, while its fruity sweeter side entices them from a distance, as creamy woods hook everyone into its powerful groove. Oud Paradisio is delicious to wear, never too cloying with its purple leather, spice and florals keeping it in check. Playful in that 70s’ disco way but remixed into the now as a leather jewel with Thai oud accentuating all the stunning facets. Oud Paradisio is like slipping into a sculpted high-end fashion piece that feels both sophisticated and joyful to wear as its deep purple hues shine like gems.
